Ancient animosities bestirred on that fateful day
And the scavenging birds of prey feasted
Upon the fields of battle
As they ever had
And would.

The wars had started when rulers tamed the world
And stored up the goods that fed
The ones who obeyed
As they ever had
And would.

The blood-stained meadows soaked up losses
And still produced the grains of power
That the exalted retained
As they ever had
And would.

There were always some rebelling and trying
And exerting what strength they held
But they lost once and again
As they ever had
And would.

For the universal soldier obeyed the power mongers
And received his reward in the honor
Or glory they would bestow
As they ever had
And would.

Until the final battle between proof and magic
And the bringers of truth and light won
With honesty promulgated
As they ever had
And would.

So the birds feasted well for one last time
And the winners became true givers
Not the takers and fakers
As they ever had
And would.

Thus the common folk could rejoice at last
With dancing and singing once more
And lovers embraced in joy
As they ever had
And would.
